Description

The Lewis Hills Trail crosses the Lewis Hills from Fox Island River in the south to Blue Brook in Serpentine Valley in the north. The “hills” themselves are located approximately18km (11miles) north of Stephenville and 27km (16miles) southwest of Corner Brook, and at the 814m (2,671ft) Cabox, is the highest point on the island of Newfoundland. From the southern trailhead off Cold Brook Road the trail crosses a 2km wetland revealing spectacular views of a rust-colored peridotite mountain range. Descending over 152m (500ft) to cross Fox Island River, the trail rises through a peridotite valley to a height of 640m (2100ft), before the final 4km (2.6mile), 174m (571ft) ascent to the Cabox. From the Cabox the trail will continue west across the hills to the ruggedly scenic Molly Ann Gulch, a steep fiord-like valley with sunsetting views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, before continuing north to Rope Cove Canyon and Buds Ponds overlooking the awe-inspiring Serpentine Valley.

Descending eastbound into the valley the trail will afford magnificent views of Serpentine Lake and the Blow Me Down Mountains before crossing Blue Brook and connecting to Logger’s School logging road at the northern trailhead.
